If you've rooted your Android device, or jailbroken your iPhone, then you may find that Pokémon Go no longer works on your device. I can't play Pokémon Go on my rooted or jailbroken smartphone Your data should be saved to the cloud, so when you relaunch Pokémon Go sign in and your progress should be saved. If that still doesn't help you may need to uninstall and reinstall Pokémon Go. See if there is an option to update the app. If the servers are fine and you still can't open Pokémon Go, open up the app store on your phone and search for Pokémon Go.
If it still doesn't work, then there may be server issues – you can check out the Server status page mentioned above to see if that is the cause. If you can't open the Pokémon Go app at all then try restarting your device and trying again. On Apple devices, open up Settings, tap on 'Privacy' then 'Location Services' and make sure that toggle is switched to green.
